Casino Deposit Declined Fixes

Bank gambling blocks, 3-D Secure, card type and name mismatch: why a casino card deposit fails in Ireland and what to check, step by step.

Online casino deposits often fail in Ireland because the player's card is blocked by the bank, the transaction may not meet 3-D Secure authentication standards, or the transaction conflicts with legal restrictions on credit card gambling payments set by the Gambling Regulation Act 2024.

Many transactions are blocked by the bank because — at a player's request — a gambling block is activated on the credit or debit card. Both Bank of Ireland and PTSB now offer this feature. Customers with Bank of Ireland can trigger the block by using webchat, or, alternatively, calling the bank's support line. PTSB provides a digital version that customers can activate in its banking app.

To determine if the bank is the barrier, customers need to check the gambling block status:

  • Bank of Ireland customers should have their card number at hand when contacting the bank.
  • PTSB customers can log in to their bank app, select “Manage Cards,” and check if the “Block Gambling Transactions” option is active. If the customer is not registered for Open24 Online Banking, they can register, download the app, and use the same steps.

If the block was switched on deliberately, it is doing its job: removing it takes a waiting period at most banks, and the National Gambling Helpline (1800 936 725) is free and open 24 hours. If no block is active, the transaction can still be declined for other reasons.

A second common obstacle is that the card chosen for the deposit does not meet the legal or scheme criteria. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 also provides for a ban on licensed gambling operators accepting payment by credit card, and many card issuers decline gambling payments on credit cards. Casino operators based outside Ireland may still be flagged as gambling merchants by card schemes.

When a deposit still fails after confirming that the bank has not blocked their card, players should consider the card scheme in use, the legality of the chosen casino, and the possibility the card is being flagged, and whether the 3-D Secure confirmation in the banking app timed out. Players unsure why their cards are declined can also get support from their banks.
